What to Check Before Buying an Insurance Policy

The best time to find the fine print is before you need it.

Confirm the risk

Write down what you want the policy to protect, what a serious loss might cost, and which risks you can reasonably self-fund. This gives the quote a job.

Read the conditions

Check deductibles, limits, exclusions, waiting periods, valuation rules, cancellation terms, and renewal language. If a phrase changes your decision, ask the insurer to explain it in writing.

Keep the record

Save the quote, declarations page, policy wording, payment history, and claims contact. Consumer protection often starts with being able to show what you were told and what you bought.
