Financial Terms Everyone Should Understand

A small glossary for the words that shape everyday money decisions.

Cost words

A premium is the price paid to keep insurance in force. A deductible is generally the amount paid toward a covered loss before insurance contributes. An interest rate is the cost of borrowing or the return paid on a deposit, stated as a rate.

Planning words

Liquidity describes how quickly an asset can become usable cash. Net worth is assets minus debts. A sinking fund is money set aside over time for a known future expense.

Question words

When a term appears in an offer or policy, ask what it changes: the amount, the timing, the risk, the access, or the decision. Understanding a word is useful when it helps you ask a better next question.
