Fixed does not mean permanent
Fixed expenses are costs that usually stay close to the same amount each billing cycle: rent, a subscription, or a minimum loan payment. They can still change when a lease renews, a rate resets, or a service is canceled.
Variable does not mean optional
Groceries, utilities, fuel, healthcare, and household supplies can vary without being discretionary. Separating “changes in amount” from “can be skipped” keeps a budget from labeling necessary costs as personal failures.
Use the categories to plan
Budget fixed bills first, give variable essentials a realistic range, and leave room for irregular expenses. A useful budget describes how life behaves; it does not require every month to look tidy.
