Define an emergency
An emergency fund is cash reserved for a necessary, unexpected expense or an interruption in income. It is not the same as a vacation fund, a planned repair reserve, or money invested for a distant goal.
Build from your essential month
Add up housing, basic food, utilities, insurance, transportation, medication, and minimum debt payments. Then consider income stability, dependents, health needs, and how quickly you could replace lost work.
A two-income household may need a different cushion from a freelancer with uneven contracts. Use common rules as reference points, not as a test you can fail.
Keep it useful
Choose an account that is accessible without market risk or a complicated withdrawal process. Once you reach a target, redirect the same transfer toward another real goal instead of treating saving as a finish line.
