Portable moving containers sit between a rental truck and a full-service mover. U-Haul U-Box and PODS both deliver or make available containers that you load, then transport or store them for you. The services solve the same broad problem, but container size, delivery options, storage structure, labor, route availability, and quote design can make one much cheaper for a specific move.
The right comparison should start with your addresses, move date, amount of furniture, and required storage time. National averages are much less useful than two live quotes built from the same move.
U-Haul U-Box uses one primary container size
U-Haul’s current U-Box materials describe a portable container of roughly 8 feet by 5 feet by 7.5 feet. U-Haul says one U-Box can hold approximately a room and a half of household goods.
For a larger move, you order multiple U-Box containers. U-Haul says you generally are not charged for extra containers that are reserved but ultimately not used, subject to current reservation terms.
PODS offers multiple container sizes
PODS currently offers 8-foot, 12-foot, and 16-foot containers in eligible markets. The 12-foot container is generally positioned for local moves, while the 16-foot container is commonly used for larger homes and longer-distance moves.
Container-size availability can vary by route and market, so use the live quote rather than assuming every size is available everywhere.
Container size changes the pricing logic
With U-Box, a three-bedroom household may need several smaller containers. With PODS, the household may fit into one or two larger containers.
The cheapest quote therefore cannot be predicted by comparing one U-Box with one 16-foot PODS container. Compare the number of units required for your actual inventory.
U-Box offers several delivery methods
U-Haul currently lists four main ways to access a U-Box: U-Haul delivery, delivery with Moving Help, self-delivery using the special trailer where available, or loading the container at a U-Haul location.
Those options can materially change cost. A customer who can tow and load a U-Box from a nearby location may pay differently from someone who wants door delivery and professional loading.
PODS focuses on door delivery
PODS says it delivers the container to the customer’s property, allows loading at the customer’s pace, then moves the container to the next home or a PODS Storage Center.
PODS uses its PODZILLA level-lift delivery system and publishes clearance requirements for container placement. A customer needs to confirm that the driveway or site can accommodate delivery.
Storage is built into both models
U-Haul can store U-Box containers at a U-Haul facility or keep them in the transportation flow until the customer is ready. Monthly rental fees can continue when the move spans more than one month.
PODS includes the first 30 days in the initial price structure according to its current ‘How PODS Works’ materials and then charges monthly if the customer needs longer storage.
Quote structure matters
U-Haul says its U-Box online quote provides a breakdown that can include container rental, origin delivery or access, shipping, destination delivery, storage, and optional insurance or Moving Help services.
PODS says moving cost depends on container size and number, distance, time frame, and season. Its current site directs customers to obtain a personalized quote.
Do not compare only the headline quote
A portable-container move can have charges at several stages: container delivery, monthly rental, transportation, final delivery, optional storage, insurance or contents protection, loading labor, permits, and taxes.
Put every expected charge into one comparison sheet.
U-Box payments occur at different stages
U-Haul currently says the first month’s rental, delivery fees, and selected storage insurance can be charged around origin delivery. Shipping and transit charges can be billed separately before destination arrival.
That means the cash outflow may occur in several installments rather than one charge on reservation day.
PODS includes at least 30 days of use
PODS currently says the first 30 days are included in the price and then rental becomes monthly if additional time is needed.
That flexibility can be valuable when a home closing is delayed or the customer wants to load gradually.
Professional loading should be quoted separately
U-Haul connects customers with Moving Help providers who can deliver, load, or unload U-Box containers. PODS says it can connect customers with professional packing and loading providers.
If you need labor, obtain those quotes at the same time. A cheaper container that requires much more labor can produce a higher all-in move.
Distance changes the winner
A local move and a cross-country move use very different logistics. The transportation cost can dominate the total on a long-distance route.
Request quotes using the same origin and destination ZIP codes and the same approximate pickup and delivery dates.
Season changes the price
PODS explicitly says season is one factor in its pricing. Moving demand is often higher during summer and at month-end.
If your dates are flexible, obtain quotes for more than one week. Moving a few days earlier or later can change container availability and price.
Permits can add another cost
If the container must sit on a public street, some cities require a permit. Apartment buildings and HOAs can also restrict container placement.
PODS tells customers to have required permits or approvals ready before delivery. U-Box customers face the same local-property constraint even when the provider itself does not issue the permit.
Example: one-bedroom apartment
A one-bedroom apartment may fit in one U-Box or an 8- or 12-foot PODS container depending on furniture and inventory. The U-Box may be attractive if the customer can self-deliver or use a nearby U-Haul location.
PODS may be attractive when driveway delivery and one-container capacity reduce handling.
Example: three-bedroom long-distance move
A larger household may require several U-Box containers but only one or two larger PODS containers. The long-distance shipping quote, not the local rental fee, may decide the comparison.
Estimate container count conservatively. An under-sized plan can create last-minute rental-truck or additional-container costs.
Damage protection should be compared on the same basis
U-Haul offers optional SafeStor or SafeHaul coverage depending on storage and shipping. PODS offers its own protection options.
Read exclusions, deductibles, covered causes, and declared-value rules. ‘Insurance included’ and ‘coverage available’ are not equivalent statements.
Access during storage can matter
If the container will be stored at a facility for several months, ask how and when you can access the contents. On-site storage at your property provides different access from warehouse storage.
A move with frequent storage access may favor a different setup than one where the container will remain sealed until final delivery.
