What Does Renters Insurance Usually Cover?

The word “usually” is doing important work here.

Personal property

Furniture, clothing, kitchen items, and electronics may be covered after a listed event, subject to the policy limit, deductible, valuation method, and exclusions. Keep an inventory so you can see whether the limit is realistic.

Liability and guest injuries

A policy may help with certain liability claims, but the exact conditions and exclusions matter. It is not a substitute for reading the contract or understanding what happens when a guest, roommate, or pet is involved.

Temporary living costs

Additional living expense coverage may help with some extra costs when a covered event makes the rental uninhabitable. Ask about limits, documentation, and how long the benefit can apply.
